Keylogger Protection – The Basics

Keyloggers can consist of the hardware together with the software variation. The software kind indeed being far more widespread than its hardware cousin which often includes a straightforward apparatus linking your computer keyboard to your actual computer. Generally speaking both are after the details you type on your computer keyboard even though some of these products are often even able to take screenshots of one’s computer’s desktop.

A good hardware keylogger is considered the nastiest of the 2 as it can read your individual computer’s BIOS code. Your BIOS password is definitely the preferred protection since it protects your PC from loading the operating system. This also signifies that a physical keylogger is actually OS independent.

In making matters even worse, it is not uncommon for this sort of keylogger to be assembled inside the computer’s keyboard so that it is nearly impossible to spot. It becomes even less difficult for the attacker should you use a cord-less computer keyboard, like the majority of of us. There exist wi-fi hardware keyloggers out there that will identify virtually any connections between your PC keyboard and your home PC.

Exactly what do you do in order to safeguard yourself against this kind of infiltration?

The only real simple and easy defense to protect against hardware keyloggers is to visually scrutinize the connection between your keyboard and your PC or in addition to this protect yourself by denying any physical access to your system by an intruder. Easier said than done.

The average Joe may very well hardly ever come across a hardware keylogger and will be significantly more worried about its software counterpart which usually ends up on a PC through uploading viruses from the net or possibly checking unwanted e-mails. Different from most computer viruses or Trojans, keyloggers don’t announce their presence. They sit quietly in the background without anyone’s knowledge, tracking each and every single keystroke you are making.

You should never solely depend upon your anti-virus and / or Internet security protection method to shield you from keylogging. These programs will be offering some standard defense, still in order to play it secure you really should purchase a stand alone anti-keylogger in addition to your current antivirus package. A proactive keylogger should scramble all of your key strokes. As a result, regardless if a keylogger managed to slip past your main protection, all of the intercepted computer data would be of no use to the cyber-criminal

  1. Is keylogging something the average home owner needs to worry about or is it more likely to happen at a business where the data might be more valuable. For example, a real estate firm might be the target of keylogging if their competitor can gain new property listings by monitoring the receptionists computer as this is the likely location that phone messages are written in emails to each of the sales people and the address of each new inquiry would be passed to the keylogger.

    What do you think?

I would suspect that most people trying to install keyloggers are after specific data, so not targeting your average home owner. Still, you can never be sure as a keylogger doesn’t announce its presence like a virus or a Trojan.

Most commercial Anti Virus software comes with a virtual keyboard and maybe it would be a good idea to use it when entering credit card details or passwords. Better be safe than sorry.
